Hamza played less than half an hour of play, even having a few chances to show off, but at the final whistle he was met with unexpected criticism. Khaled Qadallah, former Al-Ahly star, expressed his disappointment towards the coach for his attitude towards the young player, stressing that such behavior should never happen, especially with a player who is still at the beginning of his career. "I criticize Hossam Hassan for what happened after the match against South Africa. The match was over, and he should have waited for the players to return to the dressing room to speak to Hamza. It is not right to treat the players in this way, especially a young man who could prove fundamental for the national team in the future," he said in an interview with CBC.
Qadallah also called the playing time given to Hamza ridiculous considering the performances he had shown on the pitch. "Hossam Hassan has full control over who can play and who should remain on the bench. In my opinion, Hamza Abdelkarim should have started the match. I don't understand why he wasn't fielded, given that the team played without a striker. If he wasn't called up to play, what's the point of calling him up? He's a talented player and, if he gets the chance to play, he will be able to prove himself."
In Catalonia, it is believed that Hamza's experience with the Egyptian national team can help him grow as a footballer and hopefully he will have more playing opportunities in the future. Hansi Flick, the Barcelona coach, said that Hamza will have the opportunity to integrate better into the team starting from October, and could even take the field during the next match against Getafe.
What happens now
With controversy on the rise, it is likely that Hossam Hassan will need to review his approach towards حمزه عبدالکریم and consider giving him more opportunities in the future. The situation could also lead to a wider debate on the management of young talents in Egyptian football, especially in view of the upcoming international competitions.
