Some schools in the region are taking a "flexible approach" to when pupils will come in on Monday, if England's World Cup match against Mexico goes ahead in the early hours as planned. Cottingham High School in East Yorkshire has announced that lessons will start at the usual time, but "pupils arriving between 9am and 11.25am will be deemed to be present for the morning session". Kevin Rowlands, headteacher at Winterton Community Academy, in North Lincolnshire, said: "We are already fighting a losing battle if we are trying to maintain usual expectations." However, it is not yet certain that this flexibility will be necessary, as it emerged on Friday that the match start time could be moved from 01:00 BST to 19:00 on Sunday. Before news of the possible earlier start time broke, Rowlands said: "We've just taken a flexible approach and told our students that... the expectation is to arrive as usual. However, at the same time, there is a bit of flexibility. If you arrive a little later, as long as you can still get to school, that's fine with us." England manager Thomas Tuchel told a press conference that he supported the idea of children watching the match. “Write a justification for the school and make them watch football,” he said. "Come on, there will be a long time to go to school, but every four years there will be games like this. Let them watch, it will be a great game." Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson told the BBC she would prefer children to go to school. “I won't make demands on parents about bedtimes – they can decide what's best for their family – but we try to get the kids into school on Monday,” she said. Rowlands added that his school is prepared to manage students' emotions in the event of an unfavorable result for England. "I'm confident that, win or lose, they'll appreciate having the opportunity to watch it. In fact, they're probably too tired to be in a bad mood, so we'll be ready."
