Egypt, who had never won a match in the knockout rounds of the World Cup in previous editions, opened the scoring with Emam Ashour, who headed home Karim Hafez's cross in the 20th minute. Australia responded in the second half, when Aiden O'Neill took a free kick that hit Egyptian defender Mohamed Hany's head, leading to an own goal.

Despite chances for both teams, the score remained unchanged until the penalty shootout. Egypt showed great composure, hitting all four of their shots, while Australia saw Harry Souttar miss with his first attempt, and Lucas Herrington hit the crossbar with his second. With this victory, Egypt advances to the round of 16, where they will face the winner between Argentina and Cape Verde.
