Massimiliano and Sara were riding a Scarabeo Aprilia 250 and were traveling along the road from Corniglia to the seaside village of Vernazza, in the Cinque Terre area. It was 9.30pm on Sunday evening and the couple were headed to Vernazza to attend the show of the comedian-singer-cabarettist Paolo Rossi. Fate, which had taken Father Franco from him too soon, decided to abruptly interrupt his journey too.
News of the drama spread quickly, unleashing a wave of deep emotion that united Italy's footballing community from north to south. The U.C. Sampdoria, Fiorentina and Lucchese immediately issued official statements of deep condolences, rallying around the family for the loss of an exemplary professional and a good man.
