Luis de la Fuente, who is in his fifties, had been out of work for two years when he responded to a job advert. So he began his career in the Spanish football federation, where he worked in the shadows for years. As Luis Enrique's successor, he conquered the Nations League and the European Championship in 2024. Now, the World Cup victory is within reach. But who really is Luis de la Fuente?

On the ground floor of the headquarters of the Spanish football federation, you can admire the portraits of all the Spanish internationals. Every player who wore the Selection shirt watches from the wall. It's a snapshot of Spanish football history. But one face is missing: that of the man who must lead Spain towards a new World Cup. Luis de la Fuente, as a player, never managed to go beyond the Under-21 level and therefore does not have a place in the gallery. Yet, he was fundamental to the careers of many other internationals who are present instead.

The fact that De la Fuente was so close, but never wore the shirt of the great Spain, fits perfectly with his path. His influence on the national teams and on Spanish football in general has been notable, but until the 2024 European Championship, he did not receive his due recognition. He was the man behind the scenes, the silent force. Only in recent years has this perception begun to change.
