Egypt coach Hossam Hassan dedicated the Pharaohs' historic victory over Australia to the Egyptian and Palestinian people, after his team reached the round of 16 of the World Cup for the first time in history thanks to last night's dramatic penalty shootout victory.

Speaking after Egypt's 4-2 victory on penalties following a 1-1 extra-time draw in Dallas, Hassan hailed the achievement as "a milestone not only for Egypt, but for Arab and African football".

The former striker, after praising the "unwavering support of Egyptian fans at home and abroad", also expressed solidarity with the Palestinian people, saying he witnessed their celebrations after the Pharaohs' victory.

"We saw how happy the Palestinians are with this victory. May God give them strength," Hassan said. "I dedicate this victory to the Egyptian people and the Palestinian people."
