The 88-year-old German journalist Hartmut Scherzer, who is covering his 17th world championship, recalled his first world championship. – How do you remember your first world championship? – 1962 was a difficult year to reach Chile. The flight from Frankfurt to Santiago cost so much that you could buy a Volkswagen with that amount. Can you imagine something like this? – With great difficulty. And how did you get there? – With the German team. I was sitting right next to the players. Flights were different back then… The pilot signed a large document for us certifying that we had officially flown over the equator on that day. When we landed in Santiago, we then flew three times over Aconcagua, the highest mountain in the Andes. For us that was also a tourist flight. That thing will remain in our memory forever. At the time, charter flights didn't yet exist, they were just starting to be talked about.
