The Chicago Blackhawks prepare for the long-awaited draft with some moves on the transfer market ahead. The management is considering looking for an established defender to strengthen the team, and one of the names circulating is that of Bowen Byram of the Buffalo Sabres. Byram, a young left-handed defenseman, would fit well into the Blackhawks' plan, but much will depend on the Sabers' demands and the player's willingness to extend his contract, which expires at the end of next season. Currently, his salary is $6.25 million.

The Blackhawks plan to trade some of their draft picks, but will have to find a beneficial deal, as many teams may be interested in getting players in return, not just draft picks. According to Matt Fairburn, a reporter who follows the Sabres, Byram could become a valuable commodity for Buffalo in their attempt to replace Alex Tuch.

Additionally, the Blackhawks could consider targeting Toronto Maple Leafs forward Matthew Knies if he becomes available, but they are not expected to offer the fourth pick of the draft for him. Regarding Mason McTavish of the Anaheim Ducks, it appears that there are no intentions to enter into negotiations.

In terms of roster updates, Ilya Mikheyev is expected on the market on July 1st, but a possible renewal with the Blackhawks cannot be ruled out. Multiple sources expect Mikheyev to sign a three-year contract with a salary of around $3.5 million. The Blackhawks, on the other hand, are reportedly offering a three-year contract for around 4.5 million.

Additionally, the Blackhawks are set to give qualifying offers to Connor Bedard, Drew Commetto, Ethan Del Mastro and Kevin Korchinski, while Dmitri Kuzmin and Ryan Mast will not receive such offers. Finally, management is expected to discuss with Jonathan Toews the possibility of a one-day contract for his retirement, maintaining good relations with the player since he left the team.

Coach Jeff Blashill expressed optimism about his staff, expecting all members to return for next season, and spoke of positive dialogue with the players. Finally, Blashill shared some thoughts on game strategy, in particular regarding the possibility of using multiple defenders in numerical advantage situations, underlining the importance of maintaining a balance between attack and defense.
