The Mexican storm was too strong for Ecuador: the masters
Mexico beat Ecuador in the round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup, qualifying for the quarterfinals. Gilberto Mora made history as the youngest player at this stage since Pelé.
Harry Kane scores a crucial goal from the penalty spot to lead England to victory against Mexico. US President Donald Trump praises the English captain's performance.
The Three Lions team, coached by Thomas Tuchel, showed a remarkable performance, with two quick goals from Jude Bellingham in the first half having put England ahead. However, Mexico reopened the match with a goal from Julián Quiñones just before half-time. Kane then extended England's lead, but also committed a foul which led to a penalty for Mexico, converted by Raul Jimenez, reducing the score to 3-2.
Despite a difficult situation, with England down to ten men following the dismissal of right-back Jarell Quansah in the 54th minute, the team withstood Mexico's pressure to claim one of the most remarkable victories in the national team's history - arguably the best since 1966.
Among the numerous praise for Kane's performance, that of the President of the United States, Donald Trump, who expressed his appreciation for the English captain, stands out. “Harry Kane of England is a GREAT player!!!” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform. It is not the first time that Trump has intervened in this tournament, partly hosted in the United States.
In another incident related to the tournament, Trump contacted FIFA president Gianni Infantino to ask for a review of a suspension of a US forward, Folarin Balogun, who was sent off during the US match against Bosnia-Herzegovina. FIFA's disciplinary commission subsequently decided to suspend the sanction, allowing Balogun to continue playing, and Trump welcomed this decision, thanking FIFA for "doing what was right".
With this victory, England continues their adventure in the World Cup and prepares to face Norway, hoping to continue their journey towards the trophy.
