Last night's Freiburg Bundesliga victory against Schalke 04 2-1 was a night to remember for Keisuke Goto. The Japanese striker, who came on as a substitute in the second half, scored the winning goal for his team. This very important success, however, was also achieved with some difficulty, given that Freiburg played most of the match with 10 men, due to the expulsion of Yuito Suzuki. Regarding Goto's arrival on the pitch, Freiburg coach Julian Schuster said: «Goto entered the pitch with great desire and determination. His work was exceptional and his goal was a fair reward for what he showed."
Goto, who entered the field in the 69th minute, scored the winning goal in the 86th minute, with an assist from Vincenzo Grifo. Coach Schuster also wanted to underline the importance for Goto of having Japanese teammates in the team, such as Yuito Suzuki, but also Rihito Yamamoto. «It is normal that for a player who comes from another country, and in particular for someone like Goto, who is very young, it is important to have compatriots in the team. This helps a lot with insertion. But I also want to underline the great desire to improve and to put himself at the service of the team that Goto has. He is a player who always asks a lot of questions, who is always very curious. And all this, combined with the great commitment he puts into training, is bearing fruit."
On the sidelines of the match, there were some episodes that demonstrate how well-liked Goto is within the team. In fact, goalkeeper Mio Backhaus, who is Japanese by origin even though he was born in Germany, wanted to give Goto a signal of approval. After the match, in fact, in the mixed area, where the players are interviewed after the matches, there was a large representation of Japanese journalists who follow Goto. Backhaus, noticing that his partner was receiving a lot of attention from Japanese journalists, moved away a little and gave a thumbs up, as if to say that he too was pleased to see Goto so busy and appreciated.
This victory allows Freiburg to remain in first place in the table, ahead of Bayer Leverkusen and Borussia Dortmund.
What happens now
With this victory, SC Freiburg prepares to face the next challenges in the Bundesliga with renewed determination. Coach Julian Schuster could continue to rely on Goto and other young talents to maintain the team's competitiveness. Furthermore, the presence of Japanese teammates such as Yuito Suzuki and Rihito Yamamoto could further facilitate Goto's integration, contributing to his growth and the team's performance later in the season.
