Germany-Paraguay, tactical analysis
Germany lost to Paraguay in an exciting match that ended in penalties, despite coach Julian Nagelsmann's various attack plans.
France beat Sweden with a convincing 3-0, advancing to the round of 16 of the World Cup. Mbappé scored twice, setting a new record for goals in knockouts, while Olise shone as a play creator.
After a positive start for Sweden, who showed good game patterns until the first water break, France returned to the pitch regenerated after a conversation with coach Deschamps. The French quickly took control of possession, breaking away from Sweden decisively. The match ended with a convincing 3-0, thanks to a brace from Kylian Mbappé and a nice goal from Bradley Barcola.
During the first half, France found it difficult to overcome the Swedish defence, forced to attempt long range shots. The Swedes, physically strong and tall, defended well against the French pressure and high balls. Barcola attempted an effective dribble to enter the area, but the Swedish defense kept the feared French attackers at bay. A goal from Mbappé was disallowed for offside, a clear sign that the Swedish defense was doing its job.
However, after the water break, French pressure began to build and the Swedes began to buckle. Mbappé and Olise hit the post, while Rabiot forced Zetterström into an important save. Sweden's resistance collapsed at the end of the first half, when Mbappé, after an excellent play, slipped the ball into the bottom corner.
The French captain thus set a new record, becoming the player with the highest number of goals scored in the knockout rounds in the history of the World Cup, surpassing the previous 8 goals of Ronaldo and Leônidas, taking him to 10. With another record achieved, Mbappé aims to reach his former teammate at PSG, Lionel Messi, the current all-time top scorer in the tournament.
Olise, known for his reserve off the pitch, proved crucial on the pitch, creating scoring opportunities. After a tactical change by Deschamps, he was moved to a central position, from which he was able to best express his vision of the game, providing precise assists to Barcola and Mbappé. With this, Olise has reached 32 assists for the season for club and country and now leads the assists table in the World Cup with 5 to his name.
