Fiorentina, the bad season is reflected in the World Cup: never so few players called up in the last 48 years
Fiorentina will have only one representative, Marin Pongracic, at the next World Cup, an event that has not happened since 1978.
The negative effects of Fiorentina's season are also reflected in the next World Cup. Marin Pongracic will in fact be the only Viola player called up for the competition which will start in North America on 11 June. To find an edition of the World Cup with only one Fiorentina representative, you have to go back to 1978, when the only Viola present in Argentina was Giancarlo Antognoni with the Italian national team. A fact that illustrates how little the current squad has managed to have an impact on an international level.
Pongracic sole representative The only purple face present in the United States as mentioned will be Marin Pongracic, called up in Zlatko Dalic's Croatia. The defender, already called up to the World Cup in Qatar without however being able to take the field, will now have the opportunity to finally chase his debut in the World Cup after the seven benches accumulated in the last edition. Fiorentina inevitably also pays for Italy's absence from the competition, considering the large presence of Italian players within the squad. Nonetheless, someone like Dodo was never able to really get into Brazil's rotations, while Gosens remained outside of Germany's choices. No call-up also for the young Kospo who, after being called up by Barbarez with Bosnia in the matches in September and October, saw his chances disappear after a season in which he was never able to take the field with the purple shirt.
Fiorentina more international A fact that will certainly not please Fabio Paratici, who is aware of how these showcases are very important for showcasing the valuable pieces of one's repertoire and creating value and interest around one's brand by using the best players available to the various clubs. On the other hand, it was the sporting director Gigliato himself, in the presentation press conference, who highlighted these concepts: "The Fiorentina of the future must be attractive, beautiful to look at, international".
