Domino's is helping American soccer fans cope with the sending off of striker Folarin Balogun during a World Cup match. The United States earned its second win in the World Cup elimination rounds against Bosnia and Herzegovina on Wednesday, but the team had to finish the match without Balogun, who was sent off by referees in the second half, causing frustration among fans. The good news is that the red card triggered a Domino's initiative for pizza lovers. In May, Domino's announced it would be there to "ease the blow" when a player receives a red card by giving away $1 million in "Emergency Pizzas." And the fans responded. “Red card, can I get my pizza for free?” one fan wrote to Domino's on social media. Domino's jokingly declined to comment on the red card in a post on Instagram Stories. “But a promise is a promise to those who registered…” Domino’s said, adding: “Check your prizes on July 2 to see if you’ve won.” To win the free pizza, Domino's customers had to register before the start of the World Cup and sign up for the Domino's rewards program. After the expulsion, Domino's randomly selected over 60,000 winners to receive a medium pizza with two toppings for free. Winners must claim their prize by August 2nd. “Soccer gurus know that the worst thing that can happen in a game is for a player on the team you support to receive a red card,” said Kate Trumbull, executive vice president of Domino’s, in a May press release. "If this happens to the American team, Domino's is here to help ease the pain by giving away Emergency Pizzas. It may not change the outcome of the game, but it can provide delicious comfort when it's needed most." During Wednesday's match in Santa Clara, California, referee Raphael Claus called a "serious foul" against Balogun after he hit Bosnian defender Tarik Muharemovic's calf with his studs as they both fought for the ball. Despite the red card, the United States beat Bosnia and Herzegovina two-nil in the round of 32. The United States thus advances to the round of 16 and will face Belgium in Seattle on Monday. However, due to the red card, Balogun will not be able to participate in the match.
