Cristiano Ronaldo's inclusion in Portugal's starting line-up for the round of 16 match against Croatia at the 2026 FIFA World Cup allowed him to write another chapter in his career. At 41 years and 147 days, the Portuguese champion became the oldest player in history to take the field in a World Cup knockout match. Not only that, but he also set another record by becoming the oldest to score a goal at this stage of the tournament with his penalty kick in the 68th minute. This represents Ronaldo's first goal in the knockout stages of the World Cup. Last Thursday was Ronaldo's 26th World Cup match, moving him close to Lothar Matthäus, who holds the record for most matches played with 25. Lionel Messi is currently the record holder with 29 appearances. Furthermore, Ronaldo has only managed one victory in the knockout stages of the World Cup since helping Portugal to fourth place in 2006. This match could also mark Ronaldo's last performance in the national team shirt, as there are rumors pointing to a possible retirement from international activity after the 2026 tournament. Ronaldo is currently under contract with Al Nassr until the 2026-27 season. He wasn't the only veteran on the pitch, as Luka Modrić started and led Croatia at 40 years and 296 days. This marked the first time two outfield players over 40 faced each other in a World Cup match.
