Lamine Yamal debuted at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the best possible way. The young Spanish talent, who turns 19 next month, scored a 10th-minute goal in Spain's 4-0 win over Saudi Arabia. It was the first career World Cup goal for Yamal, who was also in his first match as a starter in the competition, after coming on as a substitute in the previous match against Cape Verde, in which he was not used due to muscle problems. The center of the Spanish maneuver, although on the pitch for only 45 minutes, was decisive: "The player who made the difference compared to the first match and today was Yamal, because he brings something that in my opinion no one else has, namely creativity", declared Zlatan Ibrahimović after the match. But what makes Lamine Yamal so special? "Creativity," replied Thierry Henry, who like Yamal plays for Barcelona. "He's the type of player who thinks about the game. He does things differently. He attracts the opposition's marks, finds different ways to dribble, to make assists. He knows when to speed up the game and when to slow it down. When you have a player like him in your team, anything can happen." Yamal has already demonstrated his value in his club too: last season he scored 16 goals and 11 assists, record numbers for him.
