Rumors are intensifying in Italy and England about Chelsea's new manager, Xabi Alonso, who is determined to bring Atalanta's Marco Palestra into his team. Inter, meanwhile, are racing against time to close the deal before the player can change his mind.

The situation took a sudden turn this evening, as it was thought that Inter were now in the final stages with Atalanta and the player. The transfer fee would be 45 million euros plus 5 million euros in bonuses, while today the offer for personal terms was formally presented to Palestra's agent, Alessandro Lucci. All that remained to be defined was the precise nature of the bonuses and resale clauses.

However, suddenly The Athletic and then Sky Sport Italia announced that the situation was far from over, as Chelsea were reuniting to get back into the race. It would be no problem for the Premier League side to outbid Inter Milan, both in terms of price and salary, so the real question is whether Palestra wants to stick to his original plan.

A decision could be made in the next few hours; if Chelsea manage to convince the Italian international, they could move towards Stamford Bridge. Sky Sport Italia reports that Xabi Alonso is personally responsible for the change in attitude and has ordered Chelsea to bet everything on Palestra, seeing him as a key figure for his new team.
