Ghanaian midfielder Thomas Partey was booed by some of the crowd at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro during Ghana's match against England in the group stage of the World Cup. Partey was charged with five offenses of rape and one offense of sexual assault by London's Metropolitan Police in July 2025. He pleaded not guilty to those charges in September that year. Partey was subsequently charged with two further misdemeanor violations in February this year, to which he responded with another not guilty plea in April. Partey has always denied any wrongdoing and his lawyer has previously said the footballer welcomes the opportunity to prove his innocence in a trial, scheduled for June 2027. The 33-year-old missed Ghana's first match at the World Cup — a 1-0 win over Panama last Wednesday in Toronto — after being barred from entering Canada after his visa application was rejected. He then unsuccessfully attempted to overturn the denial by filing an appeal in a Canadian federal court, after his application incorrectly stated that he had not been charged with any criminal offense in any country. It is unclear whether Partey himself completed the application. The whistles towards him were repeated several times in the first half when the former Arsenal player touched the ball. Partey was eligible to play against England after arriving safely in the United States. However, if Ghana finishes second in Group L, they will be forced to return to play at BMO Field in Toronto. Partey spoke to reporters during a training session in Boston, Massachusetts on Monday. "I'm good, I feel good, we've had good training," he said. "We are all ready. We are here to give our best and compete with the other teams. I think preparation is key." When asked why he missed the first game, he replied: "Well, I think it's part of football, there are things outside of football that you can't control. For me everything is fine now and I'm ready to play." Partey spent five seasons at Arsenal before leaving the club at the end of his contract in June 2025. He then moved to Villarreal, where he made 32 appearances, but it is understood the Spanish club have no intention of renewing his contract which expires this month. Partey has made 57 appearances for the Ghana national team.
