- Tarkowski revels in Everton's 'best performance of the season'.
James Tarkowski believes Everton delivered their "best performance of the season" in the win against Newcastle United. A few days after the Magpies were eliminated in the League Cup, Everton won 1-0 at St. James' Park thanks to a goal from Thierno Barry. Barry, who had missed a sensational opportunity in the first half, was ready to tap home from a pass after Newcastle goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek failed to hold Tyrique George's initial shot. Only Erling Haaland (13) has scored more goals than Barry (eight) among Premier League players in all competitions this season, while both of Barry's league goals against Newcastle were scored at St. James' Park. Tarkowski praised Barry for his resilience, with Everton now facing a prompt reward ahead of Friday's league match against Coventry. “I think it was probably our best performance of the season, I thought we were fantastic in the first half and we could have scored two or three goals,” Tarkowski told Sky Sports. "Thierno scored again for us. He has a lot of responsibility on his shoulders, he is our only full-time striker, so we hope he can continue to score as he has done so far. He is very strict with himself, but his numbers in terms of kilometers traveled are impressive. "A clean sheet (clean sheet, ed.) is fundamental for us. It's a long season. We take it game by game, but we feel good tonight and can look forward to Friday (against Coventry) with optimism." Since the start of 2025, only Arsenal (31) and Manchester City (28) have kept more clean sheets than Everton (20) in the Premier League. Everton have won all three meetings with Newcastle in 2026 in all competitions, the same number of wins as in the previous 12 meetings (3 draws and 6 defeats), and manager David Moyes praised his team's effort. "For the most part it was a very good performance for us," said Moyes. "We probably had more chances to score in the first half. Not realizing them made everything more difficult. It was important to score first. I am incredibly proud of the team, because the effort they put in is unquestionable. There aren't many of us, but we are doing a great job and I hope it continues. "I don't think anyone likes playing the same team twice in such a short time. So winning both matches is very important for us. We want to get back to the top of the table, it's all very compact."
What happens now
Everton now prepares for an important match against Coventry City, where the team will look to continue their positive streak. The performance against Newcastle could provide momentum and confidence, crucial elements to face the upcoming matches in the Premier League. If Barry continues to score and the defense maintains the solidity shown, Everton could further improve their position in the table.
