Steve Clarke has resigned from his role as Scotland manager following confirmation of his team's exit from the World Cup on Saturday. Scotland were eliminated from the competition following Croatia's victory over Ghana, with the announcement of Clarke's resignation coming soon after. The 62-year-old signed a new four-year contract just a month ago and leaves his post as Scotland's longest-serving manager in terms of games managed. Pinned in 2019, Clarke led a team that had not reached a major international tournament since the 1998 World Cup. Under his guidance, Scotland participated in two consecutive editions of the European Championships, ending a 28-year wait for world football. Scotland's North American campaign began with a 1–0 win against Haiti, Scotland's fifth World Cup success and first since a 2–1 defeat by Sweden in 1990. However, they were defeated by Morocco, but were still in a good position to reach the knockout stages as one of the best third-placed teams, until an error-filled performance in a 3–0 defeat to Brazil almost ended their hopes of advancement. "The most emotional part of this farewell is for my players, without whom we would not have had any of the memories we have accumulated from 2019 to today," Clarke said. "They deserve all the praise and admiration they receive, and it has been a true honor to be called their coach. Thank you for having me and good luck to my successor." Scotland's technical director, Steve Clarke, has ended his tenure after seven years, in light of the team's participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Clarke managed 81 matches during his era, winning 36 (with 16 draws and 29 defeats), with a win percentage of 44.4%. "While we are all disappointed to exit the World Cup in the group stages, we must not lose sight of the undeniable progress made during Clarke's seven years," Scottish FA chief executive Ian Maxwell said. "From starting as a pot 4 team in 2019 to winning our World Cup qualifying group, he has more than fulfilled the task of taking Scotland back to a major tournament. We thank Steve for his record-breaking contribution and know that when the disappointment of World Cup elimination wears off, Scotland's supporters will be grateful for the memories of marching proudly into major tournaments again."
