Eckert sent an intern to spy on opponents last season. The trainee was discovered while observing a Middlesbrough training session, giving rise to the Spygate scandal. As a result, Southampton were left out of the play-off final, seeing their chance of promotion to the Premier League for the 2025/26 season disappear. Eckert himself faces a possible sanction, having admitted giving instructions for the espionage actions. For Southampton owner Dragan Solak, the situation is no reason to sack Eckert. "I think he deserves a second chance, and I will give it to him," the Serbian businessman said in an interview with the BBC. "He has my full support, because I think he is very talented as a coach. I believe him when he says he didn't know he was breaking the rules. In Germany and Italy, where Tonda worked previously, these things happened much more often." However, the situation led to a heated conversation between the owner and the coach. "I told him that he broke my heart like this and that if he does it again, I won't stand for it. I told him that if I see him again in July, he will have to know the rules of the competition inside out. Otherwise, he won't be able to work for me."
