Ruben Amorim, former Manchester United manager, has emerged as the main candidate to take over as AC Milan coach. The Portuguese was sacked by United in January after a difficult 14 months. According to sources close to the former Sporting Lisbon coach, Amorim would have been removed from a possible return to Benfica, the club where he played for six years as a player. Although there is no official agreement yet, there have reportedly been talks between Amorim's representatives and Milan, who consider him at the top of the list to replace Massimiliano Allegri, sacked in May after failing to qualify for the Champions League. The Rossoneri were in fact nine points ahead of the fifth-placed team when, after beating Inter in March, they achieved only three victories in the next ten matches, accumulating only ten points and thus finishing one point behind Como, who won the last available place for the Champions League on the final day. In addition to Amorim, the American coach Mauricio Pochettino and Oliver Glasner have been linked to Milan, the latter being sacked by Crystal Palace after the victory in the Conference League final against Rayo Vallecano. Another former Manchester United coach linked to Milan, Ralf Rangnick, is instead out of the running: the coach, who moved on to lead Austria, has in fact extended his contract with the Austrian national team until 2028. If Amorim were to be appointed to lead Milan, he would have undergone an important test, given that the Rossoneri will face United in a friendly in Wroclaw, Poland, on 15 August, a week before the start of the Premier League.
