Wayne Rooney would like to see Scott McTominay back at Manchester United after being shocked by the club's decision to let him leave. After progressing through the youth ranks and making his debut in United's first team in the 2017-18 season, McTominay left the club for Napoli in 2024 for a fee of around €30.5 million. The midfielder took little time to adapt to his new club, winning the Serie A MVP award and contributing to the Scudetto triumph in his first season. In the following season, Napoli finished second in the league, also winning the Italian Super Cup. Rooney does not understand why Manchester United let McTominay leave and said he was in favor of his return. "I couldn't believe that Manchester United let him go, because he was a player who always trained to the max. And at that time, when they let him go, he was one of those players that you wanted to see on the pitch every week, because you had the impression that the others weren't giving their best and he made the difference. He played in a more advanced role and scored important goals. When Manchester United decided to let him go, I was really surprised. Now you want him back at Manchester United." McTominay scored 27 goals and provided 7 assists in 80 overall appearances for Napoli. Since his departure, only Pulisic and Calhanoglu have done better than him in goal contributions among Serie A midfielders.
