Oscar, former Chelsea midfielder, talks about the dramatic cardiac arrest he suffered during a training session with São Paulo and the importance of his son's voice in that critical moment.
The date of November 11, 2025 forever marked Oscar's life. The former Brazilian national team and Chelsea midfielder suffered cardiac arrest during a training session with São Paulo, remaining clinically dead for over two minutes before doctors managed to resuscitate him. Months later, the 34-year-old spoke about those dramatic moments for the first time in an interview with the Times. Among the most intense memories is the voice of his son, who seems to have accompanied him during the most difficult experience of his life: "I only remember hearing my son say: 'Dad, you have to come back. Dad, you have to come back'".
The former playmaker also described the sensations he felt when his heart stopped beating. "It was like a dream, a different dream. It's difficult to explain. I had always heard that when you are close to death you see yourself. I didn't see myself, but I had a beautiful dream, in which everything was wonderful," he said.
During training, Oscar's blood pressure suddenly dropped, causing cardiac arrest. The medical staff intervened immediately by giving him cardiopulmonary resuscitation for several minutes. Urgently transported to intensive care, he remained hospitalized until November 16, when he was discharged after having overcome the critical phase. After undergoing a cardiac ablation, Oscar was able to resume a normal life, but doctors advised him against continuing high-level competitive activity. The decision to retire came shortly after, putting an end to an important career.
Returning to Brazil at the beginning of 2025 after eight seasons with Shanghai Port, Oscar had built his fame above all during his years at Chelsea, where he made 203 appearances, 38 goals and 31 assists, winning two Premier Leagues, a Europa League and a League Cup. With the Brazil shirt he played 48 matches and scored 12 goals, also taking part in the 2014 World Cup. His list of achievements also includes the silver medal at the London 2012 Olympic Games and the triumph in the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup.
