Why it matters
The match against Serbia represents a crucial moment for the Netherlands, as they look to consolidate their position in the 2026/2027 Nations League. With Van Dijk on the verge of 100 caps, the match also has a personal meaning for the captain, a symbol of leadership and stability for the national team. Victory could guarantee a place in the quarter-finals, a fundamental objective for the continuation of the tournament.
Key points
- Oranje closes the interland against Serbia with Van Dijk.
- Oranje closes its series of international matches with a match against Serbia, where Van Dijk can reach the milestone of 100 appearances.
- Van Dijk en Dumfries productiefst in huidige Oranje-selectie.
The Dutch national team, known as Oranje, is ready to close this intense series of international matches with a match against Serbia. This match is particularly significant for captain Virgil van Dijk, who will have the opportunity to reach the historic figure of 100 appearances for his national team. The Netherlands currently occupy second position in their Nations League group, a position which, if maintained, would guarantee them a place in the quarter-finals of the tournament.
Serbia, on the other hand, finds itself in a difficult situation, being considered the weakest team in the group which also includes Greece and Germany. The last meeting between the two national teams, which took place in Belgrade, saw the Netherlands prevail with a result of 1-2, thus marking the first victory against Serbia, who had previously faced their 'ancestors' Joegoslavia and Serbia and Montenegro.
In the last week, a young talent, Mexx Meerdink, stole the show by scoring two crucial goals. This match marks the fourth match for the Netherlands in a period of just a month and a half, a number which in the past has represented an entire football year for the national team, such as in 1984, when they failed to qualify for the European Championship.
The match will take place in the famous Philips Stadion in Eindhoven, which will host the Dutch national team for the 36th time, a result that places it among the four most used stadiums by the Netherlands, currently shared with the legendary Bosuil of Antwerp.
Virgil van Dijk, 35, is set to become the 11th player in the history of the Netherlands to reach 100 games, the first since Memphis Depay, which makes this achievement even more special. Right back Denzel Dumfries could also reach an important milestone, currently on 79 appearances. Another player to keep an eye on is Joey Veerman, who will be hoping to make his twentieth cap.
An interesting aspect is that this year the Netherlands have always conceded at least one goal in every game, marking a negative streak that hasn't happened since 1958.
Finally, it is curious to note that Van Dijk and Dumfries are currently the most prolific scorers of the Dutch selection, with 14 and 11 goals respectively, in a context in which players such as Cody Gakpo and Donyell Malen have not been called up. Xavi, the current coach, began his adventure with the Netherlands without ever losing in the first three matches, but Marco van Basten's record, who never lost in the first 16 matches, is still far away.
What happens now
After the match against Serbia, the Netherlands will have to focus on the next matches of the 2026/2027 Nations League, where every point will be crucial for qualification. The performance of young talents like Mexx Meerdink could influence the coach's future choices, especially in view of more demanding competitions. The season promises to be intense, with the Netherlands aiming to maintain their form and improve their position in the group.
