The career of Nneka Ogwumike, one of the greatest players in WNBA history, will end at the end of next season. Ogwumike has in fact announced that the 2026 season will be the last of his sporting career. The news of Ogwumike's retirement was greeted with great emotion and sadness by the entire WNBA environment. Ogwumike was a great athlete, but also a leader, having held the role of president of the players' association (WNBA Players Association) for many years. In this role, Ogwumike guided the league's athletes in crucial moments, such as during the negotiations for the new collective agreement which guaranteed greater protection and earnings for the players. But Ogwumike's career has also been full of successes on the field: she is the league's fourth-best scorer ever, won a WNBA title with the Los Angeles Sparks in 2016, was named MVP of the season in 2014 and participated in several editions of the All Star Game. Ogwumike was also an extremely consistent and reliable player, so much so that she rarely faced criticism for her performances. Speaking of performances, Ogwumike announced his retirement just as he was in a period of great form, having received several awards for his performance in recent months. His absence will be felt not only for his quality of play, but also for the charisma and leadership he has demonstrated throughout his career. For this reason, the opponents, the fans and the teammates themselves will want to pay homage to her in the best possible way, trying to have her finish her career with one last great result, namely the victory of the WNBA title. This season, Ogwumike is averaging 14.8 points and 7.3 rebounds per game. In recent days, Nneka Ogwumike was also the protagonist of an exclusive interview for The Athletic, in which she explained the reasons that led her to make this decision. Here's an excerpt from that interview: "I always wanted my career to have some sort of narrative arc, something that people could look at and say, 'Oh, wow, there was a meaning to that.' later, who will say: 'Oh, that player was strong, I want to be like her'." The WNBA, however, is a league that is constantly evolving and growing, and there are always new players ready to take the place of the veterans. In this regard, last week there was a lot of talk about a young player, Angel Reese of the Atlanta Dream, who showed off some super performances this August.

What happens now

With Ogwumike's retirement, WNBA teams such as the Minnesota Lynx and Las Vegas Aces are expected to prepare to fill the void left by her presence. The 2026 season will therefore be an opportunity for new generations of players, such as Caitlin Clark and Paige Bueckers, to emerge and shine in the league. Additionally, his legacy as president of the players association will continue to influence future WNBA negotiations and policies.
