Former Newcastle United scout Paul Montgomery questions the team's strategy regarding player negotiations, highlighting how their media exposure contributed to the loss of Victor Munoz to Liverpool.
Former Newcastle United scout Paul Montgomery has said the Magpies are suffering due to their media exposure in transfer talks, losing target Victor Munoz to Liverpool. Newcastle were in advanced talks to sign the striker after selling Anthony Gordon to Barcelona, but the Reds won the race for Munoz, who scored seven goals and provided five assists in 36 appearances last season.

Speaking on BBC Radio Newcastle, Montgomery said: "I was disappointed with Newcastle's point of view and thought 'here we go again'. In the past, they have shown naivety in the evolution of recruitment. I always thought that to sign a player you had to be aggressive. If you go after a player, you have to show that you want him. So, if he is in Spain, France or London, you have to go there and tell him the plan you have for the club, tell him 'we want you' and 'you will be a key player for us'. You have to persuade him and make him understand how exciting it is to join your club. I thought that spreading the word about Newcastle trying to sign the player might have triggered a reaction from Liverpool, who obviously might have been interested haggling over the price, as the figure is already set. Munoz has an exit clause and that clause can be paid by both clubs. It is clear that Newcastle were talking to the player or his representatives and thought they had practically secured him, but that has not been the case. They have made the same mistakes in the last few transfer windows and now, unfortunately, it has not started well for them.
