Nico Schlotterbeck must seriously fear for his participation in the World Cup. Germany's central defender suffered an injury during the group stage win against Ivory Coast, and the initial prognosis is worrying. Schlotterbeck felt the injury in the first half against Les Éléphants, but continued to play until half-time. Antonio Rüdiger took his place at the start of the second half, as Schlotterbeck was unable to continue. A day later, as reported by BILD, the German team doctors fear that the defender may have a damaged ligament in his ankle. If these hypotheses prove correct, there is a real possibility that Schlotterbeck's World Cup is over. A next MRI will have to provide definitive clarification. Schlotterbeck started both of Germany's matches in the starting lineup. Julian Nagelsmann and his team will face Ecuador on Thursday evening, already certain of victory in the group.
