Neymar will miss Brazil's opening match against Morocco at the 2026 World Cup due to a calf injury, but is expected to return during the group stage.

Carlo Ancelotti has revealed that Neymar will not feature in Brazil's first match at the 2026 World Cup, but he expects the striker to be able to return during the group stage. The Selecao will begin their tournament on Saturday, when they face Morocco at the MetLife Stadium in the first match of Group C. Neymar was a doubt for his debut after suffering a calf injury in the build-up to the tournament and has now been officially ruled out of the match. Brazil will also face Haiti on 19 June, before closing out the group stage against Scotland on 24 June, and Ancelotti is optimistic Neymar can take part in those two matches. "He is working hard to get back to fitness as soon as possible. We hope he can return to full training next week," Ancelotti said about Neymar. Ancelotti will experience his first World Cup as a coach; he is the first non-Brazilian to lead the Selecao in this tournament. Brazil and Morocco will face each other for the second time at the World Cup, after Brazil won 3-0 in the 1998 group stage, a match in which Ronaldo Nazario and Rivaldo scored their first goals in the competition. Brazil have won seven of their eight World Cup matches against African teams, the only exception being a 1-0 defeat against Cameroon in 2022. This match is also the only group stage match to feature two teams currently in the top 10 of the FIFA rankings (Brazil 6th, Morocco 8th). "This is a team that can compete with anyone," added Ancelotti. "We can face any opponent. We have technical quality and experience and we are absolutely confident that we can face any team. We have a good feeling about this World Cup. We are ready and prepared. At this point there is no clear favorite for the World Cup. Several teams will have the opportunity to compete until the end.",
