Manuel Neuer has no intention of continuing with the German national team for a long time after the 2026 World Cup. This is what the forty-year-old goalkeeper declared during a press conference. In Germany, there has been a lot of talk about the return of Neuer, who had decided to retire from the international scene after the 2024 European Championship. The confirmation of his presence at the World Cup came after long waits on the part of coach Julian Nagelsmann and Neuer himself, who managed to return as first goalkeeper.

In the first group match, Germany won 7-1 against Curaçao, but Neuer still had to concede a goal. "It's already clear to me that this will be my last tournament," said Neuer, who has 125 caps for his country. "I don't intend to still be in goal for the European Championship in two years." However, the 2014 world champion preferred not to make a definitive announcement on his international career: "I don't want to think that these are my last matches. I will look forward and enjoy every match. For this reason, after the defeat in the quarter-finals against Spain in 2024, I have not made a statement, I don't want to be distracted from this idea."

For Neuer, who is linked to Bayern Munich until mid-2027, the World Cup will continue this Saturday with a group match against Ivory Coast. Germany is seen as one of the title contenders and Neuer also believes in the team's potential. "I absolutely believe this team can do it. Otherwise I wouldn't be here. It's a gift to be a part of this group."
