Julian Nagelsmann defended Germany from criticism over their players' effort during their defeat to Ecuador, telling reporters: "Please stop this nonsense!" Germany, already confident of first place in Group E, were defeated 2-1 in their last group match, while their opponents managed to overturn the score and take three points at the New York New Jersey Stadium. Nagelsmann's team's 11-match winning streak is now over and they did not record a clean sheet in any of their last nine matches of the tournament, equaling their longest run together with the first nine matches of 1934 and 1954. Since the start of the 1998 World Cup, this was only the second time that Germany had lost a match in which they opened the scoring (W25 D2), following the 1-2 defeat against Japan in 2022. Although he was unhappy with his players' performance, Nagelsmann quickly dismissed claims that this was due to a lack of effort, given that their place in the knockout stages was already secured. “Please stop this nonsense, honestly!” Nagelsmann told reporters. "Didn't they really want to give their all? Obviously, we made different changes than we could have made in moments when we urgently needed another goal. But we can't say to any player that he didn't accelerate, that would be too obvious to me. We have to learn that after a good start and an early lead, we can play more calmly, instead of changing positions too quickly. We simply have to be more patient and maintain a better structure in our positions. We deliberately made a lot of changes. You could see that we also had some tired legs. You can't blame anyone for the the fact that everything is a little slower and takes more time. We trust every player in the squad and we have to give the players the chance to prove their worth." Interestingly, it was in New York that Germany was eliminated from the 1994 World Cup after relinquishing a lead, losing 2-1 in the quarter-finals to Bulgaria at Giants Stadium. Joshua Kimmich, making his 113th cap to move level with Philipp Lahm for eighth on his nation's list of all-time top scorers, acknowledged the four-time world champions were worthy losers against Ecuador. "We started well, but then we lost the ball too easily and kept inviting them to attack us," he added. "We made everything easy for them and let them into the match. In the second half, the defeat was deserved.",
