Herbie Williams, one of Swansea City's legends and former Wales international, has died at the age of 85. Williams, originally from Swansea, joined the club aged just 15 in 1955 and played for his local team from 1958 to 1975. With a total of 513 league appearances, he is the third most capped player in the club's history. The Championship club said they were "deeply saddened" by the death of "one of the club's most loyal servants". "A kind and humble man, with a deep love and affection for Swansea - city and club - Herbie will be greatly missed by all who knew him," the Swans added. Williams, who played primarily as an inside forward, was part of the Swansea team that enjoyed a memorable run to the FA Cup semi-finals in the old Second Division in 1963-64. Defeated at Villa Park by Preston North End, they also beat Liverpool at Anfield in that match. Williams helped Swansea gain promotion from the Fourth Division in 1969–70 and made three appearances for the Welsh national team while playing for the club. At the end of his career, he spent a short time in Australia before returning home to Swansea.
