United States coach Mauricio Pochettino plans to rest key players in the final group match against Turkey, with an emphasis on maintaining fitness for the elimination round.

INGLEWOOD, Calif. — With nothing on the line in Thursday's final Group D match against Turkey, United States coach Mauricio Pochettino plans to rest four starters at risk of suspension for the start of the World Cup elimination round. He will make careful choices regarding his star striker Christian Pulisic, who is returning from a calf injury, and Cristian Roldan, who has a quadriceps problem. It will also evaluate the fitness level of players who have accumulated a lot of minutes in the first two matches or who are feeling the physical effects after a long season at European clubs and a month with the national team. Firstly, Pochettino wants his team to be in peak condition for Wednesday's round of 16 match in Santa Clara, California. That said, he's not downplaying Thursday's game at SoFi Stadium at all. "I have to make sure that the team that goes out on the pitch wants to eat the grass here at SoFi and play as if it were the World Cup final," Pochettino said in Wednesday's press conference. “We have to perform, and I have no doubt that the team that plays will perform well.” Pochettino is not expected to revolutionize the entire formation. Goalie Matt Freese, who hasn't been tested much in the first two games, will likely keep his place. For positional reasons, Pochettino could very well continue to focus on Weston McKennie, versatile as ever. Striker Ricardo Pepi, who replaced an injured Pulisic in the match against Australia last Friday in Seattle, is likely to return to the field. Players like midfielders Sebastian Berhalter and Gio Reyna, who came on in the second half of the first two games, could have opportunities; midfielder Brenden Aaronson; wings Tim Weah and Max Arfsten; forward Haji Wright; central defenders Mark McKenzie, Auston Trusty and Miles Robinson; and fullback Joe Scally. Available to play after 12 days of recovery, Pulisic appears to be on track to feature at some point. Roldan would have been a natural replacement for Adams, who has a yellow card, but his injury has put his availability in doubt. Roldan did not train with the full group this week. Center back Chris Richards, left back Antonee Robinson and forward Folarin Balogun also received yellow cards in one of the first two matches. Yellow cards that do not lead to a suspension are annulled after the group stage. Therefore, it is in Pochettino's best interests not to let them play at any time. Even though Turkey was eliminated from the competition with two defeats, Pochettino expects a difficult match. "It's a World Cup match," Pochettino said. "When you defend your jersey, your flag, your culture, it's always about pride. I have no doubt that the Turkish team will be competitive. ... We're not thinking that it will be an easy game."
