Gianluca Mancini is thrilled to finally be making his Champions League debut after Roma qualified for the competition for the first time in eight years. Roma returned to the Champions League after their last participation in the 2017-18 season, when they were led by Eusebio Di Francesco. The Giallorossi finished the Serie A championship in third place, exceeding 70 points in a season for the first time (73). They booked their place in UEFA's top competition thanks to a 2-0 win against Verona on the final day of the season.

In the last edition of the Champions League, in 2018-19, Roma were eliminated in the round of 16 by Porto, a year after reaching the semi-finals. Roma's best run in the Champions League dates back to 1983-84, when they reached the final, but were defeated on penalties by Liverpool at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome.

Mancini, who joined Roma at the start of the 2019-20 season, has never played in the Champions League and is eager to make his debut. "After the match against Verona [on the final day], hugging [Bryan] Cristante, I thought about it," Mancini told Sky Sport. "I imagined the stadiums, a melody I've never heard in my career. It's nice just to imagine it, I can't wait to play in this competition."

To date, Mancini has played 319 games for Roma, keeping 100 clean sheets and directly contributing to 34 goals (23 goals and 11 assists). Roma has thus gained access to European competitions for the thirteenth consecutive season: in this period, the Giallorossi have participated six times in the Champions League, six in the Europa League and once in the Conference League.
