Argentine striker Lionel Messi has scored 18 goals in World Cup history. This happened in the second round match of group J of the 2026 World Cup between Argentina and Austria. The game was played at AT&T Stadium (Arlington, Texas, USA). The meeting was led by the Egyptian Amin Omar. The Argentine players won 2-0. Messi scored in the 39th minute, making it his 17th goal in World Cup history. With this goal Messi won the title of best scorer in the history of the tournament, surpassing former Germany striker Miroslav Klose, who had stopped at 16 goals. Furthermore, in the 90+5th minute, Messi scored his 18th World Cup goal, thus achieving a brace in the match. The 2026 World Cup takes place in the USA, Canada and Mexico, from 11 June to 19 July. The reigning world champion team is Argentina. In the final of the 2022 tournament, Argentina faced France: after a 3-3 draw in regulation time, the South American team then won 4-2 on penalties.
