The start of the 2026 World Cup is upon us, with 48 nations competing in North America for football's most coveted prize. With 16 more nations than the previous edition in Qatar and thanks to the expansion of the rosters from 23 to 26 players, more than 1,200 athletes could take to the world stage. There will be rookies and veterans, minor teams and superstars. It is precisely this variety that makes the World Cup special, with many players who until recently would not have even dreamed of participating in such an event. At club level, especially in Europe, the system tends to perpetuate the dominance of the continent's aristocratic teams. Football's wealth has gradually concentrated in the upper divisions, with players flocking to clubs that can provide them and their families with comfortable retirement lives. Therefore, it is not surprising that many of the athletes participating in the World Cup will play in the following leagues:

  1. Premier League - England - 154
  2. Bundesliga - Germany - 94
  3. Ligue 1 - France - 78
  4. La Liga - Spain - 74
  5. Serie A - Italy - 66

The Premier League has transformed itself into a financial giant, with broadcasting contracts and commercial investments that have allowed this championship to stand out clearly from the others. However, a strong imbalance has been created, with Premier League teams also dominating European competitions: all 2025-2026 UEFA competition finals saw the participation of English teams. With promoted teams managing to snap up talent from other leagues, it is no surprise that the Premier League will have 154 players at the 2026 World Cup. The Championship also comes in ninth place with 37 players. In total, English professional football boasts 200 representatives, including New Zealander Tommy Smith, who played in the sixth division with Braintree Town last season. Manchester City is the club that sends the most players to the national team with 19, followed by Crystal Palace with 12, who won the Conference League for the first time in history. It is surprising that Real Madrid is not present in the list of teams with the most representatives of the Spanish national team, given that for the first time in history a Spanish squad for the World Cup does not feature Real Madrid players. La Liga ranks fourth with 74 players, thanks above all to Barcelona and Atletico Madrid. The Bundesliga is in second place with 94 players, also thanks to the 18 players of Bayern Munich, who had 19 players before an injury that stopped Lennart Kahr. Harry Kane could win the Ballon d'Or thanks to a great season. Ligue 1 (78) and Serie A (66) complete the top five, with the latter however heavily penalized by the fact that Italy did not qualify for the World Cup. The Saudi Pro League ranks sixth, thanks to the heavy investment that the Saudi league has made to secure the best talent in the world. As many as 45 players who will participate in the World Cup play in the MLS, which ranks seventh. Even if the quality level of the US league is not very high, it still manages to attract very talented players. The Turkish Süper Lig, with 42 players, is in eighth place, thanks also to Türkiye's qualification for the World Cup after 20 years.
