Switzerland redeemed themselves after their stumble against Qatar, thanks to substitutes Johan Manzambi and Ruben Vargas, who guided the team to a clear 4-1 victory against Bosnia and Herzegovina, putting them in pole position in Group B of the 2026 World Cup. Manzambi, just 20 years old, arrives at these World Cups after an extraordinary season with Freiburg, where he helped take the team to the Europa League final, despite losing to Aston Villa.

The young striker scored a brace, punctuated by a goal from Vargas, while another substitute, Ermin Mahmic, scored a flag goal for Bosnia deep into added time. There was still time for another late goal, when Swiss captain Granit Xhaka scored a penalty with the last kick of the match.

The match looked like it was heading for a 0-0 draw until 15 minutes from time, but it came to life towards the end. Switzerland broke the deadlock with a cross from Vargas from the left side, which was only partially cleared; Manzambi volleyed close to the spot, with a shot that left Nikola Vasilj no chance.

Bosnia suffered a red card ten minutes from time, with Tarik Muharemovic sent to the locker room for a foul on Breel Embolo, who was fleeing towards goal. The match ended four minutes later, with Manzambi again the protagonist in an action that led Vargas to score the second Swiss goal. The third goal came when Manzambi completed another good move, with Vargas passing the ball from the left.

Mahmic scored an excellent overhead kick goal in injury time, but Xhaka finally settled the score by scoring a penalty. The Swiss coach, Murat Yakin, explained that he waited until the second half to introduce Manzambi and Vargas, underlining the need for patience and to change something after the second interval so as not to give the opponent a chance to react.

Yakin praised Manzambi, calling him a happy young man with many footballing qualities: "He learned to play football on the street. He has discipline, but he still needs to work on his structure." On the other hand, Bosnian coach Sergej Barbarez urged his players to raise their heads, with the match against Qatar decisive for their future in the tournament.
