Switzerland reached the World Cup quarter-finals for the first time since 1954, beating Colombia on penalties in a goalless round of 16 tie.

The Red Cross took to the pitch without their star Johan Manzambi, who was injured during the final training session. His absence was felt, as the young midfielder had scored three goals in the tournament. Despite this, Switzerland showed good defensive organization and tried to attack in attack, but without realizing the few opportunities created.
In the first half, the only real save for Swiss goalkeeper Gregor Kobel came from a shot by Gustavo Puerta, who forced Kobel into a spectacular save. At the other end, Swiss midfielder Fabian Rieder had an opportunity, but his shot was blocked by Camilo Vargas, the Colombian goalkeeper.

In the second half, Colombia increased the pressure, but struggled to create clear chances. Luis Suárez, Sporting Lisbon striker, had a great chance but hit the ball badly, sending it off target. The 0-0 result forced the teams to play extra time, in which the tension increased significantly.
During extra time, Colombia came close to scoring when Jhon Lucumí's header hit the crossbar. Shortly after, it was the turn of Zeki Amdouni, a second-half substitute, who had a great opportunity to give Switzerland the lead, but his shot was saved by Vargas. Colombia had their last chance with Jaminton Campaz, but he wasted a great chance by shooting over the bar.
The match was then decided on penalties. Davinson Sánchez hit the crossbar for Colombia, while Manuel Akanji missed the penalty for Switzerland. However, Kobel became the hero of the evening by saving Cucho Hernandez's penalty, allowing Switzerland to celebrate their historic qualification to the quarter-finals. Switzerland is now waiting to know its next opponent, with the aim of continuing to write its history in this World Cup.
