The International Football Federation (FIFA) has responded to allegations of sexual assault against the captain of the Cape Verde national team, Ryan Mendes. It was previously reported that the footballer was suspected of having raped a Brazilian translator, who had been assigned to the team during a tour that visited New Zealand in March 2026, on the occasion of a friendly match against Chile (2-4). «FIFA takes all reports of misconduct very seriously and has a well-defined procedure for any participant in the football process who wishes to report an incident. The independent judicial bodies do not comment on the reports they may have received, nor do they declare whether investigations into alleged facts are underway. Any information they wish to share, they would do so at their own discretion. At the moment we cannot make further comments", reads the statement from a FIFA spokesperson reported by L'Equipe. The Cape Verde national team finished second in group H of the 2026 World Cup, thus scoring 3 points. The 2026 World Cup will take place in the United States, Canada and Mexico from June 11 to July 19. The reigning world champion national team is Argentina. In the final of the last World Cup, held in 2022 in Qatar, Argentina faced France. The regular time of the match ended at 3-3, but in the penalty shootout the Argentines prevailed, with the score 4-2.
