Kieran McKenna has resigned as Ipswich Town manager to take a break from football after leading the team back to the Premier League.

Kieran McKenna has resigned as Ipswich Town manager to take a break from football. The 40-year-old manager, who had just guided the Tractor Boys back to the Premier League, had been persistently linked to Fulham following the departure of Marco Silva, but McKenna will not take up that role, or any other, in the foreseeable future, thus stepping away from the spotlight to focus on his family. Following confirmation of his departure, Kieran McKenna released the following statement: «It is with a mixture of gratitude, pride, sadness and satisfaction that I have decided to step down from the honor of leading this historic football club. When you have the kind of connection we've built at this club, there's never a good time to say goodbye. However, after achieving a second promotion to the Premier League last season and after reflection over the last two weeks, I believe this is the right time to step aside. I do so with great pride in the incredible progress we have made and with enormous hope and optimism for the future of the club. Running this club has been an absolute privilege. Over the past five years we have been on an incredible journey that has brought so many memorable experiences to my professional and personal life. After giving so much to the role over the last five years, I am now looking forward to taking a break from management and dedicating some time to my family, who have been with me every step of the way in my career so far." McKenna also wanted to thank Mark Ashton and the Board for giving him the opportunity «to manage such a great club and for the unconditional support and trust they have shown me from the beginning» and also wanted to thank his coaching staff. He concluded: “But above all, thank you to the fantastic Ipswich Town fans. You have followed this club through wonderful highs and difficult lows. I will be forever grateful for the way you have welcomed me, and my family, both to the club and to Suffolk County. I will cherish the memories we shared together for a lifetime. Ipswich Town will always have a special place in our hearts." McKenna was appointed Ipswich Town manager in December 2021, having been part of the coaching staff of managers such as José Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at Manchester United. He led the Tractor Boys in 222 games, gaining promotion from League One and two promotions to the Premier League. Club chairman Mark Ashton described McKenna's exploits with Ipswich Town as "incredible". “Getting three promotions in four seasons, in what was your first managerial role, is an achievement that puts Kieran rightly among the legends of this club,” Ashton said. “The mark that he, his staff and his players have left on Ipswich Town and its community will live on forever. It captured a generation. Like many, I am obviously sad that our journey together is over, but I understand and respect the decision he made after five years of intense activity. We will miss Kieran dearly, but he and his family leave us with great gratitude for all they did. They will always be welcome at Portman Road."
