Jose Mourinho expresses confidence in Federico Valverde's role at Real Madrid despite a disappointing World Cup with Uruguay, where they were eliminated in the group stage.
After less than two weeks, the 2026 World Cup is already over for Real Madrid captain Federico Valverde. His Uruguay were disappointingly eliminated from the competition in the group stage after a 1-0 defeat by Spain on Friday, meaning he will soon return to the Spanish capital ahead of the start of pre-season preparations next month. Valverde's performances in North America have been far from his best and, considering he came into the World Cup at a difficult time at club level, there is no doubt that he will be a player under pressure when the 2026-27 season begins in August, especially as his place in Real Madrid's starting line-up could be in question. However, as reported by MD, the new Real Madrid coach, Jose Mourinho, does not think the same way. He has no doubts about Valverde, who he expects to have a key role in Real Madrid's lineup for next season. Valverde's 2025-26 season ended in difficulty after a conflict with Real Madrid teammate Aurelien Tchouameni. He suffered concussion after the pair came to blows, with the club handing out heavy fines to both; while the incident is now behind us, the Uruguayan is the one to emerge virtually unscathed, as it has been reported that Tchouameni could be sold this summer if certain conditions are met. As for Valverde, he's not going anywhere. Real Madrid support him despite a difficult few months, and the same goes for Mourinho. Everyone hopes he can return to his best level during the 2026-27 campaign, as Los Blancos aim to quickly put two seasons without major trophies behind them.
