Canadian coach Jesse Marsch is determined to take his team past the knockout round of the World Cup by aiming for a win against Switzerland.

Jesse Marsch welcomed Switzerland to Canada with his usual direct style. “We're happy to have you here,” the fiery Canadian coach said Tuesday, “but we want to beat you tomorrow.” Marsch has already led Canada to its first World Cup win and hopes for more, including another match on home soil for the Canadians. This is what they would get in the knockout stage if they managed to overcome the Swiss on Wednesday. "We obviously want to go for the win and we will do everything we can to do that," said striker Liam Millar. Marsch, an American, represents a stark contrast to Canadians' reputation for courtesy around the world. Among his moments of enthusiasm: a celebration with lateral movements and arm gestures during the 6-0 victory against Qatar. “Great moments don't come so easily, and you have to appreciate them and celebrate them,” Marsch said. It also showed his temper: After Israeli Kone suffered a fracture against Qatar, Marsch and Qatari coach Julen Lopetegui had a heated exchange that ended with Marsch throwing up his hands and walking away. Marsch served a two-game suspension for arguing with a referee in a Nations League third-place match against the United States in April 2025, forcing him to miss Canada's opening games in the Gold Cup. During press conferences, Marsch always speaks from the heart: "One thing you can expect from me is that I answer questions with what I think," he said before the match against Qatar. “I understand that in this job a lot of people choose their words much more carefully.” Born in Wisconsin, Marsch spent 14 seasons playing in Major League Soccer. He took his first coaching job in 2010 as an assistant for the US team. He got his first stint as head coach while leading the expansion Montreal Impact in MLS. He then managed the New York Red Bulls and teams in Austria and Germany before managing Leeds United in the Premier League. His name emerged as a possible candidate when the United States, for whom he played two games, was looking for a coach. Instead, he took the job in Canada in 2024, becoming the first American to lead Les Rouges. Now he has Canada one step away from their first World Cup knockout stage. “I feel like when my coach is a real person, with real emotions, that can always help the group,” Millar said. Marsch has become a soccer advocate in a country where hockey reigns supreme. “I felt strongly that through my personality and the soccer I believe in, I can help evolve the sport in the country to become something that people will actually want to participate in,” Marsch said. “We want to make this a football country, a football nation.”
