Ross Stewart, Scottish striker, has a consolidated career in the Championship, having already played for Southampton and Sunderland. With 11 goals in 33 games last season, Stewart is seen as a valuable reinforcement for Swansea City, helping to raise the club's expectations in the competition.

Why it matters

The signing of Ross Stewart represents a significant boost for Swansea City as they look to improve their performances in the Championship. With his experience and goalscoring CV, Stewart could prove crucial to the Welsh club's ambitions, especially following Liam Cullen's departure to Leicester City. His presence could also influence future decisions regarding Zan Vipotnik, expected from offers in this summer transfer market.

Swansea City have made official the purchase of Scottish striker Ross Stewart, formerly of Southampton.

The 30-year-old's arrival could cast doubt on Zan Vipotnik's future at Swansea, as the Slovenian striker faces offers in this summer transfer market after finishing last season as the Championship's top scorer.

Stewart, who was part of the Scotland squad at this summer's World Cup, has an excellent record as a goalscorer in the Championship, having scored for Sunderland and Southampton, and is considered an "experienced and proven player" for this category by Swansea manager Vitor Matos.

"In our discussions, he made it clear to us his desire to be an important figure and a leader in the dressing room. His goal tally shows that he is a player who loves to take responsibility and we look forward to working with him to integrate him into the group," said Matos.

Stewart scored 11 goals in 33 games last season for Southampton, his best performance for the Saints, although he was limited by injuries in the previous two seasons, making just 17 appearances.

The new Swansea striker has made 4 appearances for Scotland, including as a substitute against Morocco at the recent World Cup.

Swansea have sold Liam Cullen to Leicester City and could also let Bobby Wales leave on loan, which is why Stewart joins Vipotnik and Adam Idah as attacking options for Matos.

Stewart missed much of the 2025-26 season due to a thigh injury, but still put up good stats when he was available, with 9 goals and 2 assists in 27 league appearances.

He also scored 2 goals in Southampton's run to the FA Cup semi-finals, including the opener in a 2–1 win over the Gunners in the quarter-finals.

Stewart took his first steps into professional football via Ardeer Thistle and Kilwinning Rangers, before joining Albion Rovers in 2016.

From there he played for St Mirren, Alloa Athletic and Ross County, with whom he won the league and Scottish Challenge Cup in 2018-19, before moving to Sunderland in 2021.

He had a stellar performance for the Black Cats, scoring 40 goals in 81 games, helping them win the EFL Trophy in 2021 and promotion to the Championship a year later.

His performance at Sunderland earned him a contract with Southampton in 2023, where he has scored 12 goals in 50 appearances.

“We are delighted that Ross has chosen to join Swansea City, he brings with him a wealth of experience both on and off the pitch,” said the Welsh club's sporting director, Ben Stevens.

"His performances in the Championship last season were of a high standard and earned him a call-up to the Scotland national team at the World Cup. We are very excited to see him in the Swansea shirt."

Stewart is Swansea's sixth signing in this summer transfer market, following Moussa Yeo, Elijah Just, Joseph Opoku, Stephen Welsh and Leo Walta, the latter taken on loan from Benfica.

The Welsh club is also trying to strengthen the midfield, targeting the Danish player Ousseynou Fall Seck, currently playing for Randers, and the Portuguese midfielder Andre Almeida, from Valencia.

What happens now

With Stewart now available, Swansea City are preparing to integrate him into their playing system. Manager Vitor Matos is counting on him to bring leadership and scoring ability, while the club may consider further moves in the transfer market, including loans for Bobby Wales. Competition for offensive spots will intensify, with Stewart, Vipotnik and Adam Idah vying for leading roles in the offensive department.
