The Paraguay Football Association has sent an official complaint to FIFA asking for England international midfielder Jude Bellingham to be punished, the Mirror reported. The reason for the complaint is an incident that occurred during the group match between England and Ghana at the 2026 World Cup, in which the English footballer covered his mouth with his hand while talking to the opposing striker Jordan Ayew. The Paraguayan federation claims that there was a disparity in the application of the rules, as in an earlier match of the tournament, their player Miguel Almirón received a straight red card for a similar action in a match against Turkey. This rule was introduced by FIFA before the start of the tournament after the disqualification of Benfica player Gianluca Prestiani for insulting Vinicius Junior. Bellingham avoided being sent off because the refereeing team did not consider his actions as a confrontation with the opponent. According to the current regulation, the direct red card for closing the mouth with the hand applies only in cases where the gesture is used during a fight or aggressive interaction with an opponent.
