There is no better way to start at a new club than starting the first two available games. In this sense, Denzel Dumfries, 30, has made an excellent start at Real Madrid. His journey at the club has just begun, but having the coach's trust right away is always a positive sign. After increasing his physical workload, the Dutch footballer was rewarded with a starting place, beating his main competitor, Trent Alexander-Arnold, putting the Englishman in a difficult position ahead of the new season, as reported by AS.
The pressure on Trent is palpable. The English defender, one of eight first-team players to start training early, played at right-back in Real Madrid's two training matches at the Estadio Alfredo Di Stefano. Against Fiorentina, in the first official test of the pre-season, Trent also started, joined by Dumfries, who had only completed five training sessions under Mourinho. The surprise came in Budapest: the Dutchman started for the second consecutive match, no longer as a winger, as in his debut, but as a conventional right-back, his natural role.
His presence pushed Trent to the bench, with the new signing winning his first battle for a starting place this season. Now it's time for Trent to respond. The Englishman has no choice but to react. After a first season that didn't live up to expectations, Trent is looking to establish himself as Real Madrid's starting right-back. His inconsistency and defensive vulnerability prevented him from consistently maintaining his position in his first season in Madrid. Repeated physical problems also halted his progress as he was starting to cement himself in the starting XI. This led to his exclusion from the national team at the World Cup, an event which is expected to serve as a wake-up call for a player José Mourinho knows well from his Premier League days.
In England, Mourinho faced Trent for the first time in 2017, when the Portuguese was managing Manchester United. Two years later, they crossed paths again, this time with Mourinho at the helm of Tottenham. Now, with Dumfries determined to prove his worth and make the role his own, it is up to Trent to recapture the level he showed at Anfield and which made him one of the best right-backs in the world – the level Real Madrid are keen to see again.
What happens now
With Dumfries having already secured a starting role, he is expected to continue to improve and integrate into Mourinho's playing system. The pressure on Alexander-Arnold could push him to give his all to win back his place, creating healthy competition that will benefit Real Madrid. Furthermore, the club may consider further reinforcements in the transfer market, especially if Dumfries' performance continues to impress.
