Newcastle are about to lose another great player. Sandro Tonali joins Anthony Gordon and Alexander Isak in abandoning St James' Park in less than 12 months, for a combined fee of £300 million. Despite their owners' wealth, Newcastle cannot spend as much as they would like in the transfer market and are battling what they might call the restrictions of the Premier League rules. Newcastle's revenue has increased significantly since the takeover, but still remains far behind the six richest clubs. Making significant profits is one way for Newcastle to increase their spending power, but the reality is that they cannot compete with the richest in the league. Tottenham have no European football this year and have finished fourth from bottom for the last two years, but thanks to their huge revenue streams, which topped £560 million last year, they are able to sign one of Newcastle's best players. Gordon and Tonali left relatively early, but now the key is to replace them. Eddie Howe has urged the club to move early in the transfer market, wanting quick deals. They signed a goalkeeper, but were beaten in the race for Victor Munoz by Liverpool. The events of last summer are still fresh in everyone's memories. Much more needs to be done this summer to convince skeptical supporters that Newcastle United will remain competitive in the Premier League, attract top-class players and retain their talent.
