Portuguese team Boavista has announced that it has started bankruptcy proceedings due to financial problems: the club was unable to obtain a license to participate in the championships. «At this moment Boavista is going through an extremely difficult economic situation, the further existence of which has become impossible after the Exceptional Restructuring Plan (PER), presented to the Court for approval, was not accepted. Despite the considerable efforts of the current administration, in office since 7 May 2024, and the financial support guaranteed by the majority shareholder, it was not possible to meet the conditions necessary to obtain the sports license for Liga 2 for the 2025/2026 season within the required timeframe. Furthermore, the license for Liga 3 also remains uncertain, again due to issues of debt to public creditors which are currently unsustainable for the company, despite the fact that since June 2024 accumulated sums totaling €4,998,474.29 have been paid to the government. However, the administration continues to harbor hopes of overcoming all difficulties. During this period, the management has demonstrated firmness and a sense of responsibility, fully respecting its fiscal obligations and the majority of current financial requests, without increasing the company's obligations under the current management. From a sporting point of view, despite the rigid constraints that prevented the registration of new players for five consecutive transfer sessions - due to numerous bans imposed by FIFA, accumulated over the years - the current administration, thanks to difficult negotiations, has managed to overcome these bans. This result allowed the first team to be adequately strengthened, something it had failed to do for several years. The new configuration of the squad allowed Boavista to play the season with dignity and fight until the last round to avoid relegation, a result considered extraordinary by many, given the context. However, the economic difficulties accumulated over the years, namely from 2019 to 2023 — such as the increase in tax debts, the existence of hundreds of pending legal and judicial cases, the failure to comply with previous agreements and inherited obligations — have made any out-of-court solution that would guarantee a balance between economic sustainability and inherited obligations impossible to achieve. In consideration of the fact that the Restructuring Plan (PER) did not obtain approval, the dizzying collapse in revenues due to the administrative downgrading - a consequence of the inability to collect all the necessary sums in time - and the absence of solutions that could guarantee a balance between economic sustainability and debts, Boavista found itself on the only possible legal path to carry out a total restructuring, i.e. the announcement of bankruptcy with intent to recover. This possibility, already formalized at the Commercial Court of Vila Nova de Gaia, represents a thoughtful and strategic decision, taken after the complete exhaustion of all realistic alternatives still available to the administration, which has done everything possible, in a rigorous and transparent way, to avoid this outcome. We would also like to communicate that today the entire team began the usual series of medical visits, thus starting the preparation for the 2025/2026 sports season. Detailed information on the team and coaching staff for the new year will be made public in due course. The board of directors of Boavista and its majority shareholder unanimously confirm their firm desire to bring the club back to the highest levels, regardless of the category in which it will play, and assume the responsibility of guiding the new restructuring path with attention, transparency and ambition, guaranteeing conditions for a solid and sustainable future, in line with the centenary history of the Boavista football club", reads the official note from the club. It is curious to note that the majority shareholder of the club is the Spanish-Luxembourg businessman Gérard Lopez, who also owns the rights to the French club Bordeaux, excluded from French professional football due to financial problems. The next step for Boavista will be the dissolution and liquidation of the club. According to the newspaper O Jogo, the Portuguese club has failed to pay the monthly installment of €55,000. Boavista is Portuguese champion for the 2000/2001 season, winner of five Portuguese Cups and three Super Cups.
What happens now
With bankruptcy proceedings underway, Boavista will face a major restructuring to try to resolve its financial problems. The administration has expressed a willingness to overcome the current difficulties, but the team's future remains uncertain, negatively affecting the prospects for next season.
