Atalanta coach Gian Piero Gasperini praised Roma's attacking duo of Dybala and Malen, describing them as world-class. Gasperini saw his former team inaugurate the 2026-27 Serie A season with a crushing 4-0 victory against Fiorentina, with Donyell Malen scoring a hat-trick thanks also to passes from Paulo Dybala. Roma opened the scoring in the 27th minute with a fine shot from Malen, doubling their lead seven minutes after the break with a close-range shot that caught Fiorentina goalkeeper David De Gea at his post. Malen completed his hat-trick in the 60th minute, touching Dybala's cross into the net. Niccolò Pisilli took care of closing the score, taking over in the second half and scoring the fourth goal for Roma. Dybala's performance was exceptional: the Argentine provided Malen with three assists, a figure that had not been seen in Serie A since May 2021. On that date, in fact, Bologna's Emanuel Vignato provided three assists for another player from his team, Rodrigo Palacio, again against Fiorentina. Dybala also recorded the most successful passes into the opposition's midfield (25), as well as five crosses, while Malen was the Roma player with the most shots (5), touches in the opponent's box (11) and successful dribbles (3). “They are world class,” Gasperini said of Roma's attacking duo, as reported by Football Italia. "Dybala has always been like that, he just had a few too many problems with injuries. Malen is a beast, it was always said that he had 'silk' muscles, but now he is in extraordinary shape, he could even play extra time. Last year he was unlucky, he got injured while taking free kicks and penalties. Malen ended his loan at Aston Villa with 15 goals in 20 competitive matches, while this season he has already reached 3 goals, for a total of 17 goals in 19 Serie A games. No Roma player, in the three points per victory introduced in 1994, scored as much after the same number of games: Malen surpassed Gabriel Batistuta's record, who stopped at 15 goals. "Malen is extraordinary, but it's not a coincidence," added Gasperini. "He feels appreciated, strong, is a leader on the pitch and can still grow. What he is demonstrating is incredible, he must have found the right environment." Roma finished last season well, qualifying for the Champions League, and have started well this season too, winning their last six league games, scoring at least two goals per game and conceding just one goal in these games. The last time Roma recorded such a long league winning streak dates back to February-March 2025, when under the guidance of Claudio Ranieri they won seven consecutive matches. Gasperini, however, does not let himself be carried away by enthusiasm and does not make any proclamations about the possibility of achieving important objectives this season. "You always ask these questions of 'size' and I don't know, they are things you have to evaluate based on the opponents", declared the Roma coach. "When you understand what level the opponents are at, then you can make assessments. We are strong, we have an extraordinary group, we created a base last year and we have added quality. Now the group is consolidated, the new ones have joined and this is important."
What happens now
With this convincing victory, Roma is preparing to face the next challenges in Serie A with renewed confidence. The manager and fans hope that the partnership between Dybala and Malen continues to thrive, contributing to a successful season. The team will need to maintain this momentum to compete at the top of the standings.
