Manchester City's new manager Enzo Maresca has expressed his intention to increase the use of youth players in the first team during his first official interview at the club. Following the announcement that he was terminating his contract with Chelsea for £17m, the 46-year-old immediately set out an ambitious path.

Maresca is well known within Manchester City, having led the Elite Development Squad (EDS) to the Premier League 2 title in 2021 and serving as Pep Guardiola's deputy during the 2022/23 season, which culminated in the treble. This institutional link comes at a crucial time, as president Khaldoon Al Mubarak recently reiterated the coach's vision, highlighting Nico O'Reilly's promotion as an example of what the team's future will look like.

While sporting director Hugo Viana continues to move decisively into the transfer market, finalizing a record £116 million deal for Englishman Elliot Anderson, Maresca's long-term plan does not ignore in-house talent. On the contrary, the Italian coach seems to consider the youth sector methodology as a fundamental tool to deal with the fatigue of the squad in view of the Premier League debut against Bournemouth, scheduled for 23 August.

Speaking about his playing style, Maresca underlined the need to be "courageous" in employing young talent, hinting at greater use of the club's emerging stars. “In the last few years, I'm not sure how many, but even when I was here with EDS, a lot of that squad, most of those players are all Premier League footballers or almost all of them,” Maresca said.

He continued, "The way they are working and the methodology they are using in recent years also helps the young players develop in the right way. With the younger players, you have to be a little bit brave in giving them an opportunity and we will continue to do that."

Looking to the future, Maresca added: "The idea is to keep the same style of play that City have had in recent years, so we will try to do that. It's also the way I like to work. The idea is to continue to dominate games, play in the opposition's half, be aggressive without the ball and have intention with the ball. During my time as a player, you try to take the best from all the managers you've worked with."

Maresca acknowledged that he has been fortunate to work with top-level coaches such as Marcelo Lippi, who has shown extraordinary leadership, and Carlo Ancelotti, who knows how to remain calm, calling them both excellent managers.

This strategic commitment will likely form the core of Enzo Maresca's pre-season sessions, which will begin at the end of July before the team leaves for Hong Kong and South Korea for a series of friendlies. Meanwhile, this philosophical stability allows Viana to approach summer negotiations with a focused focus rather than a hasty purchase of unnecessary players towards the end of August. Current transfer stories include reports of interest in Chelsea's Malo Gusto, valued at around £45 million, along with Rodri's imminent post-World Cup surgery and links with Newcastle's Sandro Tonali and Lille's Ayyoub Bouaddi.
