Elliot Anderson admits he looks up to Declan Rice as a role model as he prepares for England's match against Ghana following their victory against Croatia.
England midfielder Elliot Anderson has revealed he sees teammate Declan Rice as a key inspiration to improve his game as both players look to anchor Thomas Tuchel's side in their World Cup challenge. The pair, who starred in the opening group match win against Croatia, are ready to take to the field again when England face Ghana on Tuesday. Anderson, who is set to earn his 11th cap, expressed admiration for the Arsenal player, who is competing in his fourth major international tournament. Speaking to ITV about who he has learned the most from, Anderson said: "I would say Dec. I think watching him throughout the season, playing for England, has been key. Even though I play alongside him and we have slightly different roles, I love him as a player and I love watching him and learning from his game. He's been incredible this season for Arsenal. He's someone I look up to." The 23-year-old Nottingham Forest player has been the subject of significant transfer speculation, with Manchester City having a £120m bid rejected earlier this month. If City were to return with an improved offer, it would surpass the £105 million Arsenal paid West Ham for Rice in 2023, which made him the most expensive English player ever. Defining his role under Tuchel, Anderson explained that his aim is to ensure control and creativity. "I'd like to say that my job is to get possession of the ball and give control to the team, and then get the ball to our attacking players, moving the ball forward. We want to play exciting football, we want the fans to be on the edge of their seats and my job is to pass the ball to the attackers and let them do their job." Ahead of their second group match against Ghana in Boston, Anderson highlighted Tuchel's commitment to perfecting possession and encouraging greater self-expression. He added: "I think it's important to be tidy, to control the ball, showing more of what we can do. We are a very athletic team and we will give them a really difficult game, but we have to be tidy with the ball and more precise."
