Today, Friday 20 October, Edin Dzeko will take the field for the last time with the Bosnia and Herzegovina national team shirt. The striker, who turned 40 last March, will in fact play against Sweden in the Nations League match, a match that will only have statistical value, given that both teams have already been relegated to League B of the competition.
An unprecedented gesture that testifies to Dzeko's importance for Bosnian football. The striker, in fact, is considered one of the best footballers in the history of Bosnia, and his contribution to the country's football movement was fundamental, especially in the early years of his career, when he played largely in Bosnia and only partly in Belgium, and then obviously moved abroad en masse with transfers to teams of the caliber of Wolfsburg, Manchester City, Roma and finally Inter.
Dzeko also revealed that he also has a gesture in mind to pay homage to his national team: "I have something special in mind, but I don't want to spoil it, I want it to be a surprise."
His last goal with the national team dates back to November 19th, when he scored in a 1-1 draw against Slovakia.
What happens now
After the match against Sweden, Dzeko will officially retire from playing football, leaving a void that will be difficult to fill for the Bosnian national team. Bosnia, relegated to League B of the Nations League, will now have to plan for the future without their captain and leader. Fans and teammates will continue to celebrate his career, while Dzeko could embark on a new path in the world of football, perhaps as a coach or in a management role.
